Needs are Rights
Needs are rights. Any being who can be
said to have a need, subsequently has a right to the fulfillment of that need.
Not only does this way of thinking allow a simple formula for evaluating claims
to rights, but it also allows a prioritizing of claims in order of need. In other
words, I might claim a right to an expensive car, but can this be considered a
need alongside a being who will die without food and water, freeze without
shelter, etc.?
One can then make the make the formula: Need in order to _________. The blank
will then be compared to a hierarchy of needs: food/shelter/freedom/luxury. Of
course much argument might occur between the last two levels. I might claim a
vacation around the world as the fulfillment of a level three need for freedom,
while another might claim the right to work less than eighty hours a week also
under the right to freedom.
